Sexually smarter: Comprehensive Sex Ed at the American School in The Hague

Sexuality, dating, safe sex…life in general; complicated topics that we sometimes avoid talking about. But it does not mean that we do not experience them. Research shows that talking about these issues with adolescents has an impact on delaying sexual activity among adolescents. By realizing that human sexuality is a perfectly natural part of life that all young people experience, and the more resources with which adolescents are prepared, the happier they will be. What’s more, they have the right to candid, reliable and accurate information on such topics.

Every year, Health[e]Foundation conducts a Sex Education class at the American School in the Hague as part of the Health[e]Living 4 Schools project. Based on new knowledge and trends in sexual education and feedback from students of the previous years, we provide a comprehensive approach to sexuality education rather than the old-school focus on abstinence. This year we had four great sessions with 25 students each busting myths, talking about sexuality, and consent. Each session ran for 90 minutes. The sessions were filled with interactive activities addressing respect, communication skills, gender identity, sexual orientation, stigma and safer sex. In the end, we closed the session with a fun condom demonstration and practice, and feedback from the students.
