New group of community health workers and educators started Health[e]Living in Uganda

In collaboration with The AIDS Support Organization and with external funding from a Private Anonymous Funder we were able to invite 35 community health workers and educators to the TASO Kanyanya Training Center, our current Health[e]Living headquarters, in Kampala.

The new participants received a tablet and toolkit which they will use to study the 10 Health[e]Living modules and facilitate the corresponding activities with adolescents in their communities. In the two day kick-off workshop all modules were introduced by our project manager Myrna Derksen. Invited guest speakers Dr. Sabrina Bakeera Kitaka, Lynda Nakalawa and Laira Kyakzike gave inspiring sessions. Lynda presented on substance misuse and addiction among adolescents in Uganda. She also invited the group to talk about child protection challenges, for instance: what to do when prevention is too late? Sabrina discussed about prevention of HIV and Laira about the importance of good and healthy nutrition for young people.

Gerald Ochieng, trainee of the previous Health[e]Living group and training coordinator at TASO, facilitated a session about STIs and taboo. Our participant trainer-goal was definitely achieved!

We wish all the participants good luck studying the modules and facilitating activities with the youth and adolescents in their communities and look forward to meeting them again in three months’ time.
