Marina Klein, McGill University and IAS Governing Council member, gave a beautiful memorial speech to remember Mark Wainberg at this year’s IAS Conference on HIV science in Paris. As a long time colleague, she not only mentioned his amazing achievements and awards but also personal memories and anecdotes; his warm, funny, thoughtful actions with his big smile toward all. As IAS president he brought scientists to Durban and the big changes in treatment, that became available for all, wherever in the world.
Mark Wainberg was a highly respected pioneer for HIV research, advocacy and scientific advancement. He died on April 11th, 2017 at the age of 71 in Bal Harbour, Florida.
Mark Wainberg was a true supporter of Health[e]Foundation. He authored the module on Antiretroviral Drug Resistance for our first and most popular program HIV[e]Education and supported us with the French translation of all HIV[e]Education modules! Despite his many obligations, he was always the first to respond to our yearly email on World Aids Day to all our authors with the request to update their module.
Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and colleagues.
